Daddy was a morally good man. he loved Momma and us kids. He worked hard and provided for our home. He served as a Deacon in our home church for over two decades. My Daddy did all this…as a Lost Man, unsaved, and out of relationship with his Creator.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Like so many unbelievers, my Dad believed that his acceptance with a Holy God would be based on whether he would be judged as “pleasing to God” on That Great Day (Acts 2:20). So he was constantly comparing his own life with that of other men. He knew all the other deacons that he served alongside, was hunting pals with some, golf buddies with others, and had been longtime friends with the rest of these men. Daddy knew that he was as “good” a man as most of them. And, even though he has followed my Mother in the act of Baptism soon after they were married, he was certainly not “born again”. His sin nature (Adam’s nature) was the same. He had not changed in his spirit. Therefore, comparing himself to others was how he measured his “salvation”.
Until one day I read what Paul wrote, addressing this very subject. And Daddy’s eyes were opened!
2 Corinthians 10:12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
And, by the grace of our Lord, Daddy’s eyes were opened. He repented and was born again. At that very moment, my was changed! He instantly went from being a “handshaker”, to a “hugger”….from being a sinner, to being a saint! My Daddy’s spirit became just as Righteous, just as Holy, just as Pure as Jesus Christ Himself!!!
1 John 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
I read, and explained, these truths to my dear Daddy. I showed him through The Word of God that his human spirit had been totally made new!!! I began teaching my Daddy how to renew his mind (his religious, and his carnal thinking), and how to accept what Jesus had provided for him on the Cross.
Although my Daddy had lived a clean, good life, he had not ever known the Love of God for himself. He had not been capable of loving others as Christ loved him until he was Born Again. Ohhhhhh, but this great New Birth had changed my Daddy! And this same experience, being Born Again, makes “all things new” (2 Cor. 5:16-21), and gives every man, woman and child the position of a saint– a child of the Most High God, and join heir with Christ Jesus our LORD!
In Acts 2, after Peter spoke about these Jews killing their Messiah, thinking Him to be a blasphemer, these men asked Peter, “What must we do?”.
Peter’s simple answer: Repent and be baptized…! Repent from what? From their unbelief in Who Jesus was, and is!
John 16:7-11 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Are you born again? Do you have the very Nature of Christ and God in you? If you do, I exhort you to discover who you are in Christ, and all that this New Life affords you. Persecution awaits. Trials await. Temptations await. Becoming a Follower of Christ costs a Disciple everything! But it is worth it all.
Mark 10:29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.
